Baker Mansion, built between 1844-1848, was the home of ironmaster
Elias Baker, the proprietor of the nearby Allegheny Furnace. Baker
had four children. A daughter died at the age of two before the
house was completed. A son, David, died in a steamboat explosion
in 1852. The other two children, Sylvester and Anna, remained there
until their deaths. According to some they are still there, inhabiting
the mansion from beyond the grave.
Anna, people believe, is responsible for the strange activity surrounding
the wedding dress displayed in a glass case on the second floor.
The dress, belonging to Elizabeth Bell, a member of another historic
family, is said to move by itself inside its case. Come and find
out for yourself, tours daily except Mondays, Memorial Day through
Labor Day.
